Roopkund is located in Chamoli district. It is a lake in Himalayas that remains frozen most of the year. Roopkund is also known as ‘The Mystery Lake’ since human skeletons and remains of horses from the Paleolithic age were found here. The lake is settled amidst panoramic mountain scenery, encircled by a rock-strewn glacier.
Roopkund is an archeological place. Roopkund is a high altitude glacial lake at 5,029 metres (16,499 feet). Locally known as Mystery and Skeletons Lake is well-known for the hundreds of human skeletons found at the edge of the lake, lying in the lap of Trishul Massif is in the state of Uttarakhand, India.
Day 1 - Arrive Kathgodam
You will arrive at Kathgodam.
Day 2 - Kathgodam to Lohajung - 220 km Approx.
The very first day we will meet at the Kathgodam railway station at 8:30 in the morning for our journey through The Shivalik Himalayas. Journey towards Lohajung Village is around 220 km. & it will take around 8 hrs. Enroute will take halt for breakfast & get ready for the rest of journey. Reach Lohajung Village in the evening.
Day 3 - Lohajung to Dindina
This is a trek of about 3 hours that brings you breezes through Oak & Rhododendron woodlands & the track is spread with dry leaves.
Day 4 - Dindina to Ali Bughyal
After having breakfast, Will start the trek. The track begins to hike steeply into an Oak & Rhododendron forest. All fatigue elapsed; immerse in the fascinating view of the rolling fields of Ali Bugyal.
Day 5 - Ali Bughyal to Bagubasa
After breakfast we start trek to Bagubasa. From here you will get view of the Neelkantha, Maiktoli, Mrigatuni & Chaukhambha.
Day 6 - Bagubasa to Roopkund
From Bagubasa, it is 5-6 KM steadily climbing to Roopkund. Today will start our trek to Roopkund early in the morning at 04:00 AM. As, we have to climb up to Roopkund while the snow is hard. In the Mid-Morning the snow becomes soft & chances to start sinking.
The Roopkun also called “Skeleton Lake” And has attracted experts, researchers, anthropologists, scientist, historian ever since.
Day 7 - Bagubasa to Bedni Bugyal
It is a steep edge descent to the Neel Ganga. 30 minutes later, you get to the tree line & steep descent that singals the end of the meadows. You can reach the river in an hour. Take your time because you will infrequently get an amazing stretch of jungle shelter. The bridge on the Neel Ganga is a peaceful location to swab the mud & dirt of the long trek.
Day 8 - Bedni Bugyal to Lohajung
After spending time in the wilds, you finally come to a busy civilization.
Day 9 - Lohajung to Kathgodam
Today will start our return journey toward Kathgodam. You will reach Kathgodam around 07:00 PM.

Q1. How about accommodation facility in this trek?
Accommodation will be in tents on all the days – each tent will be shared by 3 / 4 Hikers. The tents will be provided by Mountain Hikers. We will also put up Dinner Tent / Kitchen Tent & Toilet tents – The number will vary according to the size of the group.
Mountain Hikers will provide sleeping bag to each Hiker. The sleeping bags we provide can sustain temperatures up to -10° C on high altitude treks.
Q2. When will there be snow on this trek?
You are possible to find snow on this trek in June. Though, this depends on the snowfall that happens in the earlier winter.
Q3. At what time we supposed to reach Kathgodam?
Mountain Hikers will arrange for pick up from Kathgodam by 08:30 AM. Be sure to reach Kathgodam by 06:00 AM. Your campsite is a short trek from the point where you get dropped off by the vehicle.
Q4. When will we get back to Kathgodam?
On Day 9, we we reached Kathgodam.
Q5. What is the best way to reach Kathgodam?
You can catch Ranikhet Express from Delhi railway station at 10.40 pm. It reaches Kathgodam by 5.30 am.
Q6. Can First timers go for this trek?
Yes. Roopkund trek is a Moderate level trek. First timers can go for this trek. However, irrespective of your past trekking experience, fitness is mandatory before every high altitude trek. Everyday exercise, Yoga, jogging 5-6 km in 30 minutes can help with this trek.
Q7. Who will be trek coordinator with us from Mountain Hikers?
An expert qualified & certified Trek Leader from Mountain Hikers, along with technical guides, cooks and other staff members will be with hikers during the whole trek. This team is well trained and is always ready to help hikers.
Q8. Do I need special snowshoes for the trek?
No need to buy special snowshoes for this trek. A good trekking shoes is sufficient for the trek. We advise a pair that is water resistant. Keep sufficient spare socks for a quick change in case the snow wets the insides of the shoes.
Q9. What kind of food is served on the trek? Should we carry any food?
Mountain Hikers provides menu which is suitable for high altitude treks. Breakfast menu includes bread & Jam and butter, Dalia, Poha, sandwiches, corn flakes etc. Lunch mostly includes of Roti or Puri with Veg. sabzi. Dinner is complete with Dal, Rice, Roti and Dessert. You can carry dry snacks & dry fruits if required.
Q10. When it becomes really cold can I consume alcohol?
Alcohol is unsafe in extreme cold, especially on high altitudes. Contrary to what people believe, alcohol does not make you warmer. Instead it opens your pores making your body colder. Moreover, it dehydrates you very speedily. Hence consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited on all Mountain Hikers treks. Similarly smoking is not allowed on Mountain Hikers Treks Anyone found with alcohol is quickly removed from the trek.
Q11. What about the internet & wifi connectivity?
Networks are available up to Kathgodam.
Q12. What about the ATMs if I need to withdraw cash?
You can withdraw money at Kathgodam.
