Cultural Significance

Culturally this place is one of the most spiritually charged (Siddh) places in all over the world. Pilgrims and trekkers used to experience spiritual energy of extreme internal peace and rejuvenating mind here.

Gaumukh Tapovan trek symbolises the cultural heart of India.

According to Hindu mythology, ages ago the legendary king Bhagirath performed fierce penance for over thousands of years in order to bring Goddess Ganga (The Ganga River) from heaven to the earth, to cleanse the souls of his ancestors. Since then, people used to disperse the ashes of the departed in the Ganges, so that their souls can find peace.

It is believed that the force Ganga falling from the heaven was so immense that it would have scattered the earth, so lord Shiva stepped in to catch the Ganga in his matted hair (Jata), and then releasing it gently into the Himalayas. Gaumukh is seen as the spot where this super energy from heaven touches the mortal world.

Moving towards Tapovan, it is a meditational spiritual place for millions of years; saints, yogis, and sages used to meditate here in profound silence.

Even today you’ll find the ashram of Mauni Baba where sages used to meditate throughout the year even in the harshest weather conditions.

Religious Significance

This trek is an extension of Char- Dham Yatra, The Gangotri circuit.

Trekkers and pilgrims start their journey by attending the Ganga aarti at the Gangotri Temple, to seek blessings before entering into a high-altitude, adventurous, spiritual awakening journey.
